Student Travel Insurance
Protect prepaid academic trip costs when plans change unexpectedly
What is travel insurance for students?
InsureMyTrip Academic Travel Insurance for students, faculty, chaperones, and family members provides protection for prepaid, non-refundable expenses. An educational trip can be an adventure, and trip protection coverage may be the first step. It helps you or your student travel with fewer worries — whether you're participating in a semester abroad, taking a K–12 class trip here at home, or attending conferences for continuing education.
How does student travel insurance differ from standard travel insurance?
For many students and families, the biggest financial risk of an academic trip isn't the travel itself; it's prepaid academic expenses. Travel insurance for students provides coverage for non-refundable school costs, like tuition and program fees tied to a school or university, if travel plans change or get interrupted.
Standard travel insurance isn't designed to cover the risks of academic travel or studying abroad. It offers general travel protection for leisure-focused trips without protection for educational expenses.

What does student travel insurance cover?
Student travel insurance is designed for academic trips — think study abroad programs, class trips, and conferences. It helps protect your program fees, tuition tied to travel, airfare, housing or accommodations, and other prepaid non-refundable education travel costs.
Whether you want to insure a short group trip or a semester-long program, InsureMyTrip through Progressive offers coverage for domestic and international trips as long as 365 days to U.S. residents.
If you need international medical care, note that study-abroad travel insurance works alongside health insurance for traveling. It doesn't replace it, so consider how you'll protect yourself medically while you're abroad.
Student travel insurance coverages
Student travel insurance gives you protection for trip cancellations and interruptions, lost or delayed baggage, trip delays, and around-the-clock travel assistance services to help you during your trip. Here's how each coverage on an academic travel insurance policy generally works.
ACADEMIC TRAVEL COVERAGES
Trip cancellation coverage
You may be reimbursed for up to 100% of the insured trip cost, including eligible academic expenses, if you need to cancel your trip for a covered reason.
You can also add optional cancel for any reason (CFAR) trip protection to your policy. It allows you to cancel no later than two days before departure for reasons not covered by your plan. CFAR reimburses up to 75% of prepaid, non-refundable insured trip costs. It has specific requirements and limitations, and you must buy it no later than your final trip payment due date.*
Trip interruption coverage
If your academic trip is interrupted by an unforeseen covered reason, trip interruption coverage may reimburse up to 125% of the insured trip cost.
If you want protection for interruptions not covered by your policy, you can add interruption for any reason (IFAR) coverage. This coverage may reimburse up to 75% of unused prepaid, non-refundable parts of your trip on land or water if your trip is interrupted 48 or more hours after your scheduled departure. You must buy it no later than your final trip payment due date, and follow the plan's requirements.**
Baggage coverage
Academic travel insurance through InsureMyTrip may include coverage for lost, stolen, or delayed baggage and personal effects, to give you peace of mind while you're abroad.
Trip delay coverage
If a covered delay pauses your trip for six or more hours, trip delay coverage offers a safety net while you're stuck waiting.
Travel assistance services
You'll be able to access 24/7 travel support during your trip. Services include translation help, assistance locating lost items or replacing travel documents, and referrals to local medical or dental providers.
Pre-trip information, legal referrals, and other support services are also available, though additional costs may apply.
